    This was all concentrated on her arm. What about the man’s arm. Often times men straight arm a partner and makes them off balance.

    My Dad was a professional dancer and therefore I learned the foxtrot also. If you learned with the slow slow first, it was easier to go into turns…just a matter of how you learned and later taught others. I give anyone that asks me the choice but I explain my reasoning for my choice and let them try both…8 out of 10 find it easier for the slow slow step first even going into the turns…just a difference in teaching style

    • @countrydancex
      @countrydancex 7 дней назад

      I can see how going from a dead stop to moving could be easier with the slows first. However… beyond that brief moment, starting with the quicks is just how the dance actually works. There’s nothing wrong with starting with the slows for sure. It’s basically just skipping the beginning and doing half a basic. It’s a 6 count dance to a 4 count song anyway lol

  • @kathleendastous
    @kathleendastous 7 дней назад

    Why do you teach the 2-step with the quick quick steps first? We always taught the slow slow first so that the dancers could get on the same step easier as they entered the dance floor! I taught at the original Gilley’s in the late 70s-early 80s…Urban Cowboy era.

    • @countrydancex
      @countrydancex 7 дней назад

      Two Step used to be counted with the slows first as it started as Foxtrot. However, Two Step has been counted with the quicks first for quite some time. The reason is that most things (including turns) generally begin on the quicks and finish on the slows. If we still counted with the slows first, most turns etc couldn’t happen within a single basic. You would still be in the middle of a move when the next count would begin. That just wouldn’t make sense.

      @@countrydancex My father was a professional dancer (USO with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby)…I learned the foxtrot first. The difference between teaching studio style dancing and teaching honky-tonk style dancing…and it does make perfect sense…and I’ve been dancing for 60+ years with no complaints

    I love the country classic country music because you can dance to it. My opinion you can't dance to this modern pop country. Great bands back in the 70-90's, Lonestar, Diamond Rio, Mavericks, Ricochet Little Texas. What do we have now? I miss singers like Vince Gil, the late Toby Keith, Dwight Youkam, Shania Twain, Brook and Dunn, Tonya Tucker, George Strait, Tracy Lawerence, Hal Ketchem, Clint Black, Garth Brooks, Reba, Martina McBride, Alan Jackson, Sara Evans, Terri Clark.....Just to name a few. You could dance to their music. you could do East Coast swing to Dwight, 2 step to Clint Black, Cha Cha to George Strait, West Coast Swing to Lonestar and Wynonna. Try to do an East coast swing to today's music. What dance can you do to today's music? I'm open for suggestions!!!

I am from Southern California, and I have also noticed that country dancing has become more popular out here. It would be interesting to experience the country dancing bar scene in Texas. Are there any major differences between the country dancing bar scene in Austin, Dallas, and Houston? Or are they all pretty similar?

    I have to say I do love yalls content. I can play music but never learned to dance and have a fairly internal grasp on counts and beats and rythm. A lot of videos I have watched don't really break down the counts the way you do. As a musician I loved the part in the video where you break everything down into 2/4 or 1/2 time. I wont forget I made a bunch of people at country bar raise their eyebrows when i danced salsa to some country music.

    My wife and I learned to two-step through your videos about two years ago and have been regulars at Cowboys Red River in Dallas ever since. Thank you! As to how to explain what type of dance goes with what song rhythm…that’s really tough to encapsulate. Part of it is rooted in pure experience of dancing (also in playing music myself) and your ear and sense of rhythm learning to “tune in” to the rhythm of a song. I always mentally “overlay” the QQSS pattern to a song when it starts to make sure it “fits”. If not, I then switch mentally to the three-step polka, and if that doesn’t fit, then I try to determine if it’s a swing song (mostly those are faster beat songs). Over time, you just sorta “know it when you hear it”.
